Tis April - a month of firsts & lasts !

Its Not all Numbers

Hey Reader

'Tis April already! Is it just me or is time flying quicker these days? I'm guessing starting the month with a bank holiday coupled with the time change really doesn't help.

So here we are in British Summer Time - not sure nature as the message though it still a bit chilly & damp around these parts but I then April is known for the ''April Showers''.

We're also in the last days of the 2023/2024 tax year, which means it's time to start thinking about 'closing' our Numbers for the year so that we can finalise our self assessments & know our tax liability.

⏳ Remember, the 31st January 2025 is the final deadline for submission and payment, but I always encourage people to not to leave it to the last minute to file, your can leave the payment until January - but by preparing the & filing as soon as possible means you know how much you owe and if you've not been setting money aside as you go you have time to save it.

⚒️So what can we start doing today to prepare for filing:
(there will be other things specific to you but these will get you started)

  • Invoice and record all income for the year
  • Record all your bills and expenses for the year
  • Collect your bank interest summaries and dividend vouchers
  • Note your pension contributions for the year (You should get a summary from your provider)
  • Work from Home? you can include an allowance for use of your home to cover electricity / telephone / broadband etc. - Particularly if your home office doubles as bedroom or dining room I'd recommend using the allowance over working out usage percentages.
  • Do you know your Government Gateway details? Find them now and make sure you can login and check your contact details are correct (HMRC still sometimes send requests by letter!) - especially if you've moved since your last return.
  • Finally, don't panic especially if you see others boasting about their filed return. The only person that needs to know you've filed is You (& your bookkeeper / accountant if you have one!)

🐰 Remember if you're falling into a giant rabbit hole 🕳️
your can book a support hour with me to work through your questions & worries and get you back on track

3 Things from this month:

👂 Listening ... Mayim Bialik's Breakdown (Yep! Sheldon's girlfriend in Big Bang Theory) she's a Neuroscientist and it's all about the myths and misunderstandings of mental health and emotional well-being https://www.bialikbreakdown.com/episodes

📺 Watching ... the wonderful (but sadly no longer with us) Paul O'Grady and his Elephant Adventures. For those that don't know Elephants are my weak spot can't ''walk'' passed anything remotely elephant related. 🐘 https://www.itv.com/watch/paul-ogradys-great-elephant-adventure/2a7594

🏕️ ''Carry On Camping'' ... a few campervan trips have been booked for 2024, ''Sophia'' will be rolling from the end of the month ..

Thanks reading would love to hear your thoughts on what helped or if you would like to know more about how to review your costs and services, drop me an email

Until next time, Jane

Its Not all Numbers Hey Reader I started this newsletter a year ago, with the intention to drop by fortnightly with tips and tricks to support you with your business numbers as you negotiate life as a freelancer/self-employed business owner. But after a turbulent end to 2023 and in hindsight probably a little burnout, I admit my focus in 2024 become about me and my health. As a passionate people pleaser I tried to be there and do all for everyone, and along the way I forgot myself so...
